You can't pick 'em out in a crowd
Hello my friend:
Yesterday I was relaxing to the new CD, 'Awake,' by the amazing
baritone, Josh Groban. I am in awe of the power and control he
has over his voice.
The thing about him is that not only was he given a set of
pipes that could blow the roof off, but he constantly trains
with a voice coach. Through his actions, he proves that he
knows natural talent will only take him so far. He realizes
that if he doesn't keep his vocal chords in shape, if he doesn't
continue to work at his craft, his success could all go away in
a snap.
As I was enjoying his music, it occurred to me that when you
look at him or any other successful people in any field, you
cannot pick the top people out in a crowd. They look like
anyone else. Even in cases where a person's career has a lot to
do with their appearance, you cannot pick the successful ones
out just by looking at them.
Success is on the inside... Drive comes from within, not from
without.
No leader of any country looks like the leader of a country.
No Oscar-winning actor looks like an Oscar-winning actor.
Even 'supermodels' are often no better looking than hundreds of
other women in that field. Their success comes from a drive it
keeps them doing what they need to do.
You would never have looked at Mother Teresa and guess that she
was anything special.
Her love is what gave her the drive.
Even the most successful professional athletes with their great
endurance, speed and strength don't stand out among their peers.
The most successful athletes are usually surrounded by people
who are stronger and who can run longer and faster.
The best in any field are the ones who have the passion that
makes them want to get better, that makes them want to do their
best. People who achieve the most in life are the ones who are
enjoying themselves no matter what it is that they're doing.
The most successful people in every field are driven by purpose...
...not by the rewards.
Mother Teresa, for example, began the Missionaries of Charity,
whose mission was to care for 'the hungry, the naked, the
homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people
who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society,
people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned
by everyone.' In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for
her humanitarian efforts.
That wouldn't float many people's boats these days, but it
doesn't have to. As long as you do what you love, love what you
do and are always learning, growing and helping other people,
you will be a success.
Imagine that...
The best salespeople, the best engineers, the best gardeners,
painters, plumbers, lawyers, doctors, garbage haulers, janitors
and the best in hundreds of other fields are the ones, as it
pertains to their chosen field, who love what they do so much,
they could spend all their waking hours working at it, and it
would still feel like play.
So if you are absolutely miserable in your job or after work,
you need to do one of two things:
1) Either get a new career or hobby...
2) Start taking constant notice about what COULD be enjoyable
about what you do for 4, 6, 8 or 10+ hours a day and about your
life in general.
It's either that, or continue to be miserable, right?
If a person's basic happiness is dependent on working for a
particular company, living in a certain neighborhood, wearing a
certain designer's label, being at a specific weight, having a
particular hair color or eye color, then they're missing the
boat...
History is littered with stories of people who were beautiful,
talented, wealthy and loved by thousands and even millions of
people... who killed themselves because they weren't happy.
So happiness doesn't come from what he looked like, your God-
given talents, the amount of money you have or even what other
people think of you. Happiness comes from what you think about
yourself and what you think about all the things that are
happening around you.
No matter who you are or what your current situation is, you
truly can change what you think of yourself, you can change your
decisions and actions, you can be as happy and as great as you
want to be.
