They gotta like you before they will really listen to you
Hello my friend:
This morning my son, Mickey, walked into the kitchen where I
was standing and as he usually does, gave me a big hug.
This morning in particular, I fast forwarded in my mind to six
years from now when he'll be 15. He'll turn nine in about three
weeks from now.
My thought was that I need to make sure that we have the same
kind of relationship when he’s 15 that we do now.
Why is that important?
Because you can only be influential to someone if they like you.
People only listen to you if they trust you.
To be trusted you must be trustworthy... worthy of being trusted.
You must have true and genuine interest in them doing well.
Think about that...
People give jobs to their friends, do favors for their friends
and people they like.
When people don't like you or don't trust you (for any reason
at all), you couldn't force them to do something that had
hundreds of benefits to them.
So is the answer reading a book like Win Friends and Influence
People, by Dale Carnegie?
Well, for many people it is... The kind of knowledge found in
that book and others like it is pure gold...
But it's only gold to the people who truly, honestly, deeply
like other people.
To everyone else?
Just words...

Why will my son stand a greater chance of making greater
choices in his life?
Because the people who are most responsible for teaching him
how to navigate the treacherous waters of modern day life
actually like and love him. And so he listens and absorbs all
the best stuff like a sponge... with no resentment, no
resistance, no animosity.
So even though there are rules, even though there are very
clear boundaries, even though he doesn't get everything he
wants, he likes and loves us back.
And...
I love you all!
