One "expert" says one thing... Another equally experienced
"expert" says completely the opposite.
And so it goes in the world of diets and weight loss. A
recent article in the news comes from a health guru who says
never look at the scale because it will depress you and you will
lose your motivation.
Another article that came out the same day from an equally
experienced health expert says to weigh yourself every day
because you need to know whether you are on track or not. He
says that you need feedback to learn how your body reacts to
what you eat and your level of physical activity.
Who's right?
The answer is they are both right and both wrong.
I mean, if you are a person who sets goals and gets motivated
by reaching milestones, telling you not to weigh yourself on a
regular basis would be wrong.
On the other hand, in the case of weight, you could be losing
fat but gaining muscle at the same time. During that stage of
your body transformation you could be moving ahead toward your
goal, but not actually losing any poundage. And that could de-
motivate a certain percentage of people.
So what's the bottom line?
What should you do?
The answer is you should do what ever keeps you inspired. And
that is different for you than it is for your next door
neighbor, your sister, your son, or your coworker.
That was our challenge when we created Eating for Excellent
Health Now.
Because how you chart yourself and how you
measure your success
is less important than your overall ability
to stay committed.
If getting on a scale motivates you, then do it.
If getting on the scale de-motivates you, stay off.
When we looked at the core attitudes, beliefs and emotional
patterns of the healthiest people in the world, no one mentioned
whether they weighed themselves regularly or not.
What did come up again and again, however, is that when they
are hungry, they eat food that enhances their health, they eat
slowly and when they are comfortable, they stop. There is
simply no desire to keep stuffing food in their mouth, no matter
how good and luscious and delectable it is.
It's called self-discipline.
It's called purpose oriented.
It's called motivated.
And they do NOT suffer. They do not feel as if they are
missing out on anything.
Like my wife Sherry believes, "Nothing tastes as good as being
a size 2 feels."
So being truly healthy and trim is not about whether you weigh
yourself regularly or not. It's about the ability to do the
things that provide you with great health without feeling like
you're missing out on anything... it's about being totally
thrilled with the healthy choices you are making as you are
making them.
Because that is what true health is...
And oh, at the end of one of those health articles, the health
expert who wrote it, who is also a long distance runner and
health coach to these celebrities:
Marcia Cross, Lisa Rinna, Rachel Hunter, Rod Stewart, Michael
Chiklis, Joely Fisher, Vanna White, Kristin Davis, David
Duchovny, Judith Light, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Valerie
Bertinelli, Alyssa Milano, Carrie Otis, Ellen Barkin, and
Julianne Phillips...
...says that she uses and encourages her clients to "use
affirmations to undo the negative self-fulfilling prophecy" and
that, "They recondition your thinking... and allow you to not
take actions that will sabotage your progress."
How about that?
Everybody's doin it, doin it, doin it...
Love,
Mike Brescia
