There have been thousands of studies done over the last few
decades on how stress affects and health.
One of the more well-quoted studies looked at when people are
most likely to have heart attacks. Not surprisingly, the most
common time to have a "myocardial infarction" is at 9:00am on
Monday mornings.
Uh gee, why would that be?
Well, obviously it's the time that most people are back at it,
doing the things that stress them out the most.
What made me think about this was, upon waking this morning, my
mind immediately went to the list of very important tasks I need
to get done today... and BAM, instant heart-beat jump.
Well, all it took to get it down in literally 3 seconds was to
remind myself that there was plenty of time to do it all, that
it would all get done, it would be done well, and also in that 3
seconds, I immediately saw images and super-fast mental movies
of it all happening perfectly.
So BAM, just like that the heartbeat went back to normal, I
stretched, and told myself that today is going to be my day,
that today is for furthering my mission in life. And more
glorious images of success filled my mind.
This is the exact opposite of what happens to most people...
and the exact opposite of how I used to function.
Fight. Flight. Stress. Fear. Anxiety.
Blood vessels constricting, heart racing, images of failure,
accidents, fights, mistakes, things not getting done, excuses to
be made, guilt, frustration.
Man, I don't miss that one bit.
There are thousands of situation-specific causes of stress and
feelings of fear.
And a couple of them that just should not be part of anyone's
life are actually THE most common ones...
- Not getting done (or even starting) what you KNOW has to be
done
- Mentally dwelling on what is not right (just worrying instead
of doing something about it)
- NOT even knowing what needs to be done, and being surprised
when you are behind the 8 ball and there's not enough time to
get IT done
- Doing what is most "fun" instead of what should be addressed
first
That is part of the perfect recipe for heart attacks. Sure,
overall health has a lot to do with heart attacks, but there are
a lot of fatties out there who never get stressed out about
anything and live long, happy lives in spite of their poor
physical health.
What those people and many like them have is the ability to
keep their problems and challenges small in their minds. Small
problems are nothing to get upset over. The non-stressed-out
set sees big bad problems as exciting.
Hey, I'm just the messenger.
It's true.
See "problems" as good, and you are now facing in a new
direction and you can start getting to places in your lifetime
you couldn't have dreamed you would just a short time before.
People who win routinely and those who lose routinely are
different only in their thoughts and beliefs.
People who are happy and those who are sad, by and large, are
only different in their thoughts and their beliefs.
We have four programs that are designed to deal specifically
with these issues.
There are others that can help, too. But these, I think,
handle directly the core issues relative to stress and fear
related to job and responsibility related stress.
Love,
Mike
