Changing behaviors isn't natural

Hello my friend:

I just had a great conversation a few minutes ago with a
brilliant behavioral psychologist.  She's brilliant because
she actually gets results with people... that's right, she
actually helps people change their emotions and actions.

She doesn't get people on drugs.  She weans them OFF the
drugs their on when they start with her.  There's no sitting
around talking for years about problems that can be solved
in weeks or months.

She's solution oriented... She's not afraid to tell her
clients they need to change they way they look at
something, that they need to do something or stop doing
something.  She tells them to grow up if that's what they
need.

And she gets them using Think Right Now Accelerated
Behavior Modification Programs.

The way she says it is the truth... that changing
behaviors is not normal.  It's not natural.

You see, many of our behaviors are organic (A behavior or
result can feel good to one person but not to another)
while others are purely conditioned in.  Smoking, for
example, isn't pleasant to anyone when they start, but they
keep doing it because there are "rewards" or "benefits"
like being accepted by other people... Another one in the
case of smoking, especially after a while is the good
feeling you get when you breathe in deeply.  It doesn't
matter whether there's smoke in there or not... when you

So there is positive reinforcement every time.

And so people continue behaviors, no matter how stupid
they are, even when there are mountains of evidence that
they are life-threatening.

It's the same with any behavior...

In the sales world, there is one thing only that adds to
the bottom line.  Prospecting for new business.

But what do most salespeople avoid like the plague?

Right... Prospecting for new business.

Because there is rejection involved.  And most people have
it linked up in their nervous system that being rejected is
no fun.

The rejection feels worse than succeeding feels good.

These are just a scant few examples of why changing
behaviors is difficult... because once reinforcers are
established, it's almost impossible to change how you feel
about them.

In every area of life... every action you take, you take
because you feel there is some benefit to it OR it makes
you feel good in some way, shape or form almost instantly.

The only way long term behaviors can change is by changing
what they mean to you.  There are a number of "accidental"
ways people change their behaviors, and a few proven
therapeutic ways.  But for the most part, once people get
habits of thinking and acting, you can be pretty certain
that they are going to stay that way for the rest of their
lives.

Even my own mother smokes... has for over 40 years.  Why?
Because she will not use our program, 'I Am Smoke-Free
Now!'.  Why?  Because she doesn't really want to quit and so
she will not use the program for fear that it will make her
want to quit.

life without the smokes.

Unsupportive behaviors can go on forever, even when the

else would a person who is already 40, 70, and even 100
pounds or more overweight continue to eat.  I mean, who
doesn't know that doing that is what contributes to the
problem?
