Mentally shrinking problems to move past them
Hello my friend:
I get so many emails from all over the world every week
from people who say they feel like they just can't go on...
they fail at everything... they can't do anything right...
that circumstances or conditions around them have not made
life easy for them.
Well, if you've been reading my newsletters for a while,
you know that, over the course of my life, I've failed at
as many or more things than I've succeeded at. When it
comes to making a mistake - well, in my life, I've made
some doozies.
And I hope that continues. Truly.
Because I look at things differently now.
Because to grow and succeed big, you need to stretch your
boundaries.
Do I still make mistakes? Sure. Still fail at things?
Absolutely. Everyone does.
But now, every time I get thrown for a loop, I immediately
jump up. I shrink the problem down in my mind to make it
look small and easy to handle. I ask myself what I should
learn from it. And if I have to, I start completely over.
More intelligently.
Because (and I know this is so cliché) mistakes are
really opportunities in disguise.
In your own life, the way you instantly respond to
setbacks and adversity will predict how successful you'll
be. So many of us think about doing or acting on
something, but get sidelined by some unforeseen
circumstance...
Then panic sets in. Palms start to sweat. Immediately
those programmed, habitual negative thought patterns in
your mind start going into overdrive...
"I can't make a mistake or that's it. I'm done."
"Everyone will laugh at me..."
"They must think I'm so stupid..."
"See. I knew that wasn't going to work..."
These kind of thoughts and beliefs come in milliseconds.
Most people aren't even aware that they have them.
Or they are just accepted as fact, nothing than can be
changed or altered in any way.
These negative thoughts and attitudes (Mental Pattern of
Failure #9) means you'll miss the real opportunity that's
passing right in front of you. And that's a shame.
Our research shows is that this failure pattern is a kind
of built in mechanism... built into us humans from birth
that only a small percentage of naturally don't have or
learn to overcome.
So when most people do something that isn't correct,
experience delays or some kind of setback, their minds blow
it up so that it looks and feels bigger and harder to fix
than it really is.
And the next thing that most people's minds do - and this
is a natural and programmed in response -- is to blow the
problems/ delays/ setbacks up even further (Mental Failure
Pattern #10), where they immediately start imagining
terrible consequences of the situation. Even far beyond
what could or should happen.
This creates stress, anxiety, worry and panic.
And this creates even more stress, affects performance and
overall, has devastating health effects and shortens life
spans dramatically.
So in order to be more effective (or effective at all) in
life, to be happier every day and even to lengthen your
lifespan, you must be able to see "problems" and mistakes
differently.
You must shrink them down, put them behind you, see them
as learning opportunities instead of reasons why your life
sucks or as reasons why you'll fail.
Successful, effective happy people do this as habit.
