She was crying her head off
Hello my friend:
It was 1991 and I was giving a complete hearing test to a
78 year-young woman who was profoundly deaf in all the
higher frequencies of the human voice range.
Her hearing loss gave her trouble in all areas of her
life. Any time there was background noise to any degree,
she was lost. Couldn't tell what was being said.
And then came the killer question.
She said her 4 grandchildren (ages 5-12) were the light of
her life. They gave her life meaning, she said.
I asked her if she had any trouble hearing them with their
higher pitched voices.
She didn't answer. She couldn't.
Because she immediately started to tremble, her voice
cracked and a river of tears began streaming down her face.
I didn't know what to do, so I just grabbed some tissues
so she could dry her face.
When she finally was able to speak, she said that this is
what she missed the most, not being able to hear them well.
She knew she was missing out on the greatest stuff and it
was killing her inside.
So I really hoped that the testing revealed that she could
be helped with hearing instruments. When it did (she was
stunned at how sharp and clear she could hear with
selective amplification), I went to prepare a mold for her
hearing aid.
She stopped me, saying that she had to wait. She couldn't
get them now, she said.
Now I was stunned. She obviously had the money, her life
was on hold and her tears from the pain of not being able
to hear were still wet on her face, yet she didn't want to
do what she should do to make all the problems go away.
Once I understood her concerns and hesitations, and when
she understood how to use and take care of her new life-
savers, she was fine and went ahead.
A few weeks later, at the final fitting, she had two
little girls with her... her grand-daughters. What a
moment that was. I witnessed a miracle right then.
Because she cried again. More tissues.
Only this time it wasn't tears of sorrow, but tears of joy.
She thanked me repeatedly, for the complete testing, for
listening, for understanding her concerns and for giving
her life back to her.
When one of the girls asked, Gramma, can you hear me from
over here, the water works started all over again.
No problem. I had more tissues.
Have a great weekend.
Love,
Mike Brescia
