Here's a little background info...
First of all, you may have noticed that my daily tips were
not sent for a few days last week.
I had a very good reason...
I was taking a week long, grueling black belt test.
10 rounds of fighting with 20 sit-ups and 20 pushups in
between each round. Katas (coordinated fighting routines).
Weapons. Self-defense and grappling. A 4-mile run. All
in addition to my regular daily and nightly work routine.
Whew!
I had earned my black belt in Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate in
August 2007, but I needed to go through a probationary
period for a year, then come back and pass the test again
to be considered a "certified" 1st degree black belt.
There's a very good reason why my dojo requires black
belts to do that.
You see, some people who are in the martial arts are not
in it for the art itself, or the fitness, discipline or
focus. Instead, they just want the belt around their waist
and to be able to tell people they're a black belt. For
the glory. To puff themselves up.
So they get their black belt and stop training.
That's not what being a black belt is all about.
A true black belt is someone who has a passion for their
art, always working to improve and perfect their technique,
to help others learn and most of all, to be humble and only
use their skills to help themselves or someone in danger.
THAT'S a black belt.
So that's the reason my dojo requires a one-year
probationary period from the time that you earn your black
belt to the time that you get to be called a 1st degree
black belt. (The rank is Shodan and the title is
Yudansha.)
They want you to prove what you're all about. That you
ARE a black belt--not just that you WEAR a black belt.
I AM a blackbelt.
