Since when is trying bad
Hello my friend:
I swear that ever since Yoda told Luke Skywalker, "There
is no try... there is only do" that everyone has lost their
collective minds relating to that word.
Trying suddenly became a bad thing.
so let me clarify what wise old Yoda really meant.
When young Luke "tried" and failed to successfully use
some of his Jedi powers, he whined to Yoda, I
triiiiiiiiied." In a reeeeally whiny voice.
This got Yoda reeeeally pissed.
So Yoda, wanting his young Jedi to learn and grow and get
results, not give excuses, implored him to keep trying
UNTIL he got the desired result.
He was not saying don't try.
He was not saying that NOT truly trying (but saying you
did) is bad.
He was saying that quitting is bad... that not trying your
best is not acceptable, especially when you have superior
talent, like Luke had.
The point?
The point is, you get where you want to go when you try...
and keep trying.
Most people, though, hear the word "try" and become
reminded what their kids do...
As in "try" soccer... and quit. "Try" painting the
bathroom walls... and get paint everywhere... and then
quit. "Try" guitar lessons... and quit. "Try working
out... and quit.
That, my friend, is not trying.
That is "trying on" as in trying on a pair of pants or a
pair of shoes to see if they "fit."
It's temporary. It's fleeting.
But to put yourself into something and TRY your best. Now
that is good.
Over the last couple weeks, in Beijing, hundreds of
athletes gave their best and still didn't win a medal. But
upon further review, many of those so-called "losers"
didn't really lose at all.
Many of the losers were huge winners.
Because when you put up a time that is your personal best
and even broke an Olympic and even a world record, while
three of your competitors exceeded your performance,
"winning" bronze, silver and gold (also breaking those
records), you cannot be called a loser.
Because you TRIED your best.
You DID your best...
The best you've ever DONE. (Do, as in what Yoda wanted)
That, my friend, is a winner in anyone's book.
So today keep plugging away... keep at it.
Keep trying.
And even if someone with more talent and more skill
exceeds your performance, as long as you tried your best
and you keep trying and keep improving, you'll be successful.
You'll be a winner... today and every day.
Many people have the false belief that if they can't be
THE best at something, they shouldn't even try. Or if they
can't "win," they should not risk looking foolish.
Poppycock.
Try. Do the best you can at all you do, however good or
bad that might be...
And you will be a winner.
Because last I checked, no one now playing basketball is
better than Michael Jordan was, no one now playing hockey
is better than Wayne Gretzky was, and no one now playing
golf is better than Tiger Woods. But all those people keep
trying and fans are still watching and rooting for them.
And they're still earning the big bucks.
Today and every day I'm rooting for YOU.
As long as you keep trying.
Love,
Mike Brescia
