The good, the bad and the ugly of physical fitness
Hello my friend:
The 1967 Clint Eastwood movie, "The Good, The Bad and The
Ugly" just came to mind as I was leaving the fitness center
of our hotel. Not all, but most of the people on the
treadmills, bikes, ellipticals and machines were in fairly
good to even very good shape.
And the natives here in Aruba are like any people who eat
the foods that nature provides and move a normal amount...
very trim and truly healthy.
Many of the guests here, though, sadly, are huge, slow
moving lumbering beings who obviously haven't had a good
run, ride or lifted anything heavier than a take-out order
of pizza and wings in years.
But to be fair, it's true that just a short 40 years ago,
it wasn't that way in America. Neither the internet nor TV
swallowed up entire days and weeks. People actually had to
get up and move at work, which burned calories and kept
them trim.
40 years ago, there was no such thing as a video game, so
again, people were moving and... burning calories.
People now don't actually get together and do stuff.
They're texting and IMing. Heck, we don't even have to get
up out of our chairs or leave our homes to gamble our money
away on the one arm bandits because we can do it online at
home with a mouse.
The bottom line is that for all our modern conveniences
and "lifestyle enhancements" our bodies are suffering. 40
years ago, hardly ANYONE was obese. Now hardly ANYONE is a
normal weight...the way they were 40 years ago.
So it's not genetics.
And since we can't time travel back in history where
exercise and normal activities were...well, normal, if you
want to be the size you are supposed to be, you MUST get
your exercise in a more formal way...through a sport, a gym
membership or in a home gym.
And this is where the problem lies... as always, (even 40+
years ago), people have every reason under the sun why they
can't and won't exercise and eat right.
Many sound legitimate, especially from the people who have
every minute of their every day scheduled.
And it's a good thing they "get a lot done," too, because
since many of them are going to die 20-40 years before they
should, they BETTER be scheduled tight, huh? (Wink!)
Many excuses sound legitimate...as they lumber along
looking (and I'm not trying to be mean or condescending)
more like elephants than humans.
It all comes down to what they believe about eating right
and exercise, their attitudes about it and how those
beliefs and attitudes make them feel about it...
When you believe eating healthy and exercising are fates
worse than death... when your attitude is that sweating or
heavy breathing is for peasants... when your aches (which
usually are diminished by exercise and proper eating) are
the excuses used to avoid taking care of yourself... when
you are convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that neither
exercise nor a change in food choices would "work" for
you...
