Dumb luck or fearless savant

Hi my friend:

The summer after I graduated from high school, I took a
job selling Kirby vacuum cleaners. My first job in sales.
They were a great cleaning machine...  Nothing like some of
the vacs today (powerful, lightweight, versatile, etc.), of
course, but great for that time.

But I still couldn't sell them.

I knew every reason why someone wasn't going to buy, and I
dwelled about those reasons constantly.  My mind was filled
with thoughts of failing.  So each time I demonstrated the
machine, all I thought about was why they were going to say
'no.' 

Long story short, I quit not long after I began.

But during that same time, there was another guy there,
Andy, who was about 23 years old. 

Andy was... a bit slow.  He definitely had some type of
learning disability... he had no real social skills, he'd
just start talking about the oddest things at the most
inappropriate moments. 

And his speech was slurred at times.  He kind of spit
sometimes when he spoke.  His pants were always wrinkly,
his shirt was always untucked, and his tie was always a
twisted mess.

But he sold something almost every day.  Making a fortune.
Getting a lot of families happily involved in owning a
Kirby through him.

I once spent a day out with him.

His "secret" was no secret at all.

He was simply fearless.

He memorized all the benefits of the product.

He memorized all the pat comebacks to objections.

And he'd give them all to his prospects, no matter how
ridiculous some of them sounded.

He seemed more like a robot than a human when he was
selling, only focusing on the people and what he absolutely
knew they needed. 

He fearlessly asked questions...

Because if they answered the "wrong" way, he'd simply come
back with one of his memorized lines.  No fear.  He didn't
over-think anything.  I don't think he could if he tried.

Failing, he said, never entered his mind.  He stayed
focused on his goal... getting people to fall in love with
that machine.  And that was simple for him.

Nothing to be afraid of, he said.

The only thing he was afraid of was that he wasn't going
to get to a home before someone else did.  So he worked
till very late almost every night.  He saw more people and
closed a higher percentage of them than anyone in that
office by country mile.

I didn't figure out Andy's "secret" for another 6 years.
That's when I learned about accelerated learning and self-
talk... and how I could use them to install into my mind
the automatic thoughts, the beliefs and thus, the behaviors
of the greatest salespeople and business people in the world.

So among other things, I repetitiously drilled into my
head new beliefs about being fearless, about there being no
consequence of failure that I could not handle.

So in my business, I became fearless.  And earned a small
fortune.

Think about in your life if you had no reservations about
doing and saying whatever it took to get the results you
wanted... and you had the cahonies to go after what you
wanted, never ever getting jittery over the risks.

What would your life be like if you never felt that
familiar twinge of fear when you started something new?

You'd go after it.

I know that is hard to imagine.

Because fear jumps up and lies to us and tells us that
taking some action or trying something new would be stupid,
senseless, reckless, idiotic.

And so that is what we believe.

And we truly believe that we're doing ourselves a favor.

But deep down, our unconscious knows that it's bullshit...
that we were afraid... that we just didn't want to look
stupid if we failed.

possible actions.  Because our goals become smaller and our
dreams, soon enough, fade away.

And we become like all the other cows grazing in the
fields.  Fat, dumb and a whole lot less happy than we'd be
if we were more brave and courageous when it mattered.
